Are you single, waiting for Cupid to show up and your only defect is that you support Trump? Well then, Trumpsingles.com is the perfect place for you. It is not a joke, I wish it was. It’s a real online dating website with one purpose: “Bring together a community of likeminded individuals who believe in Making Dating Great Again!”.
David Goss, creator of the website and an associate TV producer, said “I think there’s a special stigma when people say they’re supporting Trump, because of some of the brash things that he’s said. That immediately gets (projected) on his supporters, and it makes it hard for them when trying to date”. I truly wonder why… maybe because according to Politifact only 9% of what Trump says is true?
But let’s put political views on a side for a second: according to the academic journal Political Behavior, “People who use Internet dating sites are choosing who to date based on criteria that are highly correlated with political preferences”. And if two people get together and they are politically equal, they will almost certainly become extremists, since they will never have to listen to a different opinion…
The Canadian answer
But not everybody likes Trump (fortunately) and Canadians decided to take a step forward by challenging the NY Tycoon’s website. Maple Match, an online dating website whose purpose is to make it easy “for Americans to find the ideal Canadian partner to save them from the unfathomable horror of a Trump presidency”. In case Trump wins the presidential election in November 2016, you can find a Canadian match ready to date you and take you into the Canadian borders, even if a wall suddenly pops up. A website started to make people laugh, but as soon as it went live, it was not a joke anymore… The demand increased rapidly, arriving up to 200 requests per hour!
Not a joke, but people’s reaction to someone that in the eyes of many is the biggest threat to America and the whole world. And it makes me wonder, how serious is politics? To be more precise, how can I put my faith in someone that puts his face on an online dating website and, at the same time, on the American flag? Is this politics or advertising? How distant are the two of them from each other?
Technology is the impartial instrument that people and politicians can use according to their needs…but also an instrument that make people understand where’s the wind blowing. 500 subscribers for Trump in total, 200 per hours for Maple Match… are these numbers trying to say something?
Just one last thing: please Hillary, don’t make me find out you’ve done something like this too.
